EPICS = Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System
 
PV = process variables
 
IOC = Input/output controller = application running on a computer and serving something called process variables (PVs). It used to run on VMEs, but nowadays it runs on anything.
It usually talks to hardware, but that isn’t a requirement.
EPICS is a distributed control system, which means that the IOC can run on a different computer as the user interfaces.
